 BIG TEN QUICK HITS:
  • Ohio State keeps answering the questions and passing the tests with flying colors.  It isn't always a masterpiece, but it still sells on the market.  Next task, how to get through the fluffy part of their schedule and not look all the way to Michigan.  Keep an eye on the Indiana game ahead, as the Hoosiers are the one team who can expose a questionable secondary.
  • All is not lost for Northwestern, but they are rewarded with a trip to Madison.  Both teams are bouncing back from a loss to Ohio State, so whichever team is more resilient will come to play on Saturday.
  • Iowa as a contender was pre-mature.  Penn State is not elite.  Sparty doesn't want to be forgotten.
  • Ohio State is bowl-eligible.  Michigan can become bowl-eligible this week.

PAC 12 QUICK HITS:
  •  Washington proved their worthiness, but will it just be a bunch of well-played losses in big games this year?  Oregon is next at home, maybe the Huskies can figure out a way to score with the Ducks or control the game with Bishop Sankey.
  • UCLA is in firm control of the PAC-12 South.  Arizona State is not ready yet for that crown.
  • Arizona can knock USC down to 0-3 at the Coliseum Thursday Night.  The Wildcats ambushed the Trojans last season, so confidence should not be an issue in the first USC game post Lane Kiffin.  Be interesting what kind of Trojan team we see.
  • Washington State is 2 games from bowl-eligibility, but it looks like this weekend against Oregon State is almost a must-win.  It could also turn the Beavers season in the wrong direction.
  • Oregon and Stanford can become bowl-eligible this week.

 SEC QUICK HITS:
  • Georgia survived, but continues to get banged up.  Missouri is going to be an interesting challenge this week and maybe some people will start paying attention to the Tigers if they play the Bulldogs well.
  • Interesting game between Florida and LSU this week.  The Tigers can not afford another loss if they are going to play in the SEC Title Game.  Florida can vault themselves into Championship discussion with a win.  If Florida can get the game at its pace and limit the big-play WR's, it should be a close one.
  • Wake Alabama up when October is over.
  • I thought Ole Miss would be better, but freshman need time to excel and this team is still young where the talent lies.  Better times are ahead for the Rebels.
  • Missouri, Alabama and LSU can get bowl-eligible this week.

 Big 12 Synopsis:
  • Apparently it wasn't just the competition??  The test for Baylor now is how to sustain the record-setting offensive efficiency for two more months.  Nobody has had an answer to date, but there will come a point when it is not this easy.  Until then, I am going to sit back and enjoy the fireworks.  Next victim = Kansas State.
  • Texas escaped last week in controversial fashion and now has Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry.  There are no signs that the Sooners aren't going to roll them for a 2nd straight season.
  • The combined 0-4 records of TCU and Kansas State in the Big 12 might lead to some dicey bowl-eligibility soon.  TCU has to beat Kansas, but the Wildcats are staring at an 0-3 start against Baylor.
  • Oklahoma and Texas Tech can get bowl-eligible this week.

 ACC Synopsis:
  • Maryland, we are glad you attended the Florida State game last weekend.  How about that for some separation between the ACC elite and the next group?  There were some injury issues that contributed to the massacre, so I am not dropping the Terps until I see the residual effects.
  • Kudos to Wake Forest for getting the ACC win I was starting to wonder if they had in them.  Momentum can be a crazy thing, so maybe the Demon Deacons can steal a few more.
  • Miami and Virginia Tech have now created apparent separation, although Pitt could come in to Blacksburg and change that perception this weekend.  Don't forget Paul Chryst got the Hokies 35-17 a year ago.
  • Clemson and Virginia Tech can get bowl-eligible this week.

 AAC Synopsis:
  • Nothing much new in the AAC.  Cincinnati gift-wrapped a win to South Florida and might be just the 5th best team in the conference when all is said and done.  If Houston rolls a competitive Memphis team this week, they might garner a bump up.
  • The big game this week is the Thursday Night tilt between Rutgers and Louisville.  It will be the biggest test for the Cardinals and it comes in that oh-so-tricky ESPN Thursday slot.  Teddy Bridgewater gets a chance to shine nationally, but the Scarlett Knights are proving very gritty and will not lay down easily.
  • Louisville can get bowl-eligible this week.

 Mountain West Synopsis:
  • Devastating injury to Chuckie Keaton of Utah State, ending his season and possibly the Aggies Mountain West title hopes.  I took them down two wins, but the great unknown could result in a more drastic projection change after we see how they respond.  Unfortunately for Utah State, Boise State is the first team to come calling this week.
  • I bumped Fresno State to the undefeated category, as the more I look at the remaining schedule, the less I can figure out who is going to beat them.  They are not invincible, but they have found a way thus far and might just be finding their stride.
  • San Diego State looks like a bounce-back team after a rough start.  They have the talent to churn out four more wins and get to another bowl.

  • East Carolina and Marshall continue to pace the C-USA East and there is no reason to think that will change throughout the season.  Florida Atlantic is greatly improved in the East, but not championship caliber improved.

 MAC Synopsis:
  • The separation continues in the MAC, with Ohio, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois and Ball State clearly at the top, Toledo is right there and Buffalo might be closer to this group than the group below it.
  • Please contact me if you watch any of the Massachusetts vs Miami OH game this coming weekend.  I will refer you to some professional help.  I might even skip picking the game this week based on principal.
  • The best game of this week is a non-conference game with Bowling Green traveling to SEC country and taking on Mississippi State.  With victories over two Big Ten teams and an ACC team, this would be a real notch in the belt of the MAC upper echelon to take down one from the mighty SEC.
  • Bowling Green, Northern Illinois and Ball State can get bowl-eligible this week.
