College Football 2013 - Week 2 Reset

Two weeks into the 2013 College Football season we know more than we did before it started.  Based on what I have seen so far, certain teams require an adjustment already to their 2013 outlook.  Here is a conference-by-conference look that I will update now throughout the season.

 BIG TEN SYNOPSIS:
  • Ohio State still looks like the team to beat, but Braxton Miller must be healthy for any chance at a special season.
  • Michigan moves into position as Legends Division favorites with an impressive two-week start.  Devin Gardner is the best quarterback in the Big 10.
  • Nebraska's defensive issues leave them a step behind, while Indiana's defensive issues will likely keep them out of a bowl once again.
  • The offensive issues at Michigan State are very troubling and will cost them a game against a lesser team somewhere along the way.
  • Illinois is better than I thought, getting a 2-win bump for the time being.
  • I also like how Minnesota has started and if they can beat San Jose State at home in two weeks, a bowl would be well within reach for the Gophers.
  • Purdue is terrible.

 PAC 12 Synopsis:
  • Oregon's offense has not skipped a beat and the one-two punch of Mariota and Thomas appears unstoppable.  The match-up against Stanford's defense down the road will be must-see material.
  • Washington got off to a great start, but I am not ready to dive all-in on the Huskies.
  • I am ready to dive all-out on USC.  The quarterback position is in a shambles and Lane Kiffin was a bad hire.  The Trojan defense is really good, but this situation looks like one that will only get worse.
  • Utah is off to a great start and gets a 3-win upgrade.  The margin for error is slim, but Travis Wilson looks 10 times more comfortable running an offense in year 2.

 SEC Synopsis:
  • I am sticking with Texas A&M over Alabama this week.  With all the circus that surrounds Johnny Manziel, he has that "it" factor that shows up on weeks like this.
  • I was partially right on Georgia, but they rebounded against South Carolina and appear to be the class of the SEC East.
  • Florida's offense, while not Michigan State-bad, is going to plague them all year against a tough schedule.
  • LSU's offense looks better-than-advertised.  I gave the Tigers a one-game bump based on what I have seen, but they could very well be an 11-1 or 10-2 team.
  • I like what Tennessee has done in the first two weeks, especially defensively.  They look like a bowl team.
  • Arkansas looks pretty good as well, but their schedule is going to eat them alive.

 Big 12 Synopsis:
  • If you can find a Baylor game on your television, stop and watch for a few minutes.  Chances are you will see a touchdown.  If the defense continues it's level of play that it started last November, Baylor will win the Big 12.
  • Oklahoma State looks like it has the same ingredients in place, making these two the early favorites.
  • Oklahoma needs to sort out some offensive issues and we will see how the defense fares when they play against a better offense.
  • I had partially drank the Texas kool-aid, but firing your defensive coordinator two weeks in is not a recipe for a special season.  Another average finish and a December Bowl is now the Longhorn outlook.
  • Kansas State misses Colin Klein.  Oh, and don't schedule the FCS champions when you are breaking in a new quarterback.
  • How good is the name, Baker Mayfield?

 ACC Synopsis:
  • Florida State and Clemson still look like the class of the ACC, with Miami knocking on the door.  If Jameis Winston is as good as Game 1, I feel pretty good about my prediction.  Clemson and Miami have helped the profile of the conference with perhaps the two best wins of the year thus far.
  • I seem to get overly excited about Maryland, but C.J. Brown has been fantastic thus far and Stefon Diggs is a superstar.  They received a bump in the latest projection.
  • Virginia Tech's defense is back to being great, but the offense is not matching that level.  Logan Thomas is not a first round draft pick any longer.
  • I know nothing about Georgia Tech yet.
  • There seems to be a clear divide in the ACC, so the question will remain if any of the bottom group can play their way into the upper-division.

 AAC Synopsis:
  • I don't know who is going to beat Louisville, so they have been added as a 4th undefeated team.  Someone is going to get them, partially because of the lack of competition.  They may not be ready to face adversity.  Teddy Bridgewater is really good by the way.  Welcome to Jacksonville next year Teddy.
  • I was shocked by Cincinnati's loss at Illinois, but I am sure Tommy Tuberville has those kinds of losses on his resume.  There are still 4 top teams in the AAC, Cincinnati is just closer now to 4 than they are to 1.
  • There are some really bad teams in this conference, as evidenced by the 1-7 record of the bottom 5.

 Mountain West Synopsis:
  • I am sticking with my lofty expectation for Fresno State, despite some early defensive struggles.  Derek Carr is making up for those.
  • Boise State is vulnerable this year, so beat them while you can Mountain West foes.
  • What is wrong with San Diego State?  It doesn't help to lose to an FCS school and then follow it up with Ohio State.  They can still turn the season around, partly because the bottom of the Mountain West also has serious issues.
  • I don't love Utah State or San Jose State, I just like them better than the alternatives.

  • Northern Illinois could crash the BCS party again, but I don't think the MAC is as strong this year, making the high computer numbers dicey.  The best way is to run the table, which is not out of the realm.  Some would say they have already defeated their toughest opponent.
  • The directional Michigan's are not good, but add in UMass and Akron and somebody has to win some games.
